On Thursday Mother had a day off from work, and Mother had arranged all her plans to include me. We started the day by dropping the car off at the garage, and while they fitted a new tyre and did some alignments, we went for a walk along the canal, and then onto a local field. The field is by a church and has been owned by the people of the town for several years now. Its always quiet when we go there. After an hour off-lead run around and mooch there, we went through town and found a local market. Mother brought some rolls, and scones, and off we tootled back to the garage to collect the car.
After we got the car, we went back home and we had some lunch. By 3pm we were ready for our second outing for the day. We met up with Mothers friend Abi and her two sons, ten years old and 18months old. We went to a local nature reserve, with lots of lakes. The oldest son likes to play ball and catch with me, so he was throwing my ball for me. He also threw a stick in the water a bit for me so I could go for a swim. Mother made sure he knew not to throw it otherwise for me as she worries I’ll injure myself if I chase after sticks on dry land.
While walking down the path we reached a part where the path was fully puddled and muddy, and could not be passed without getting muddy. Mother and I proceeded across the mud with minimal concern. Mother had old trainers on so was avoiding the deeper puddles but didn’t mind the mud.
Unfortunately, the older son was still wearing his school shoes so could not pass the muddy puddly area. So we turned around. I ran back the way we came, and Mother followed.
Except… It wasn’t as easy to get back the way we came.
Mother stepped over the puddle.
Her right foot stepped across, and the mud made for a slide, so her right foot slid forwards , and her butt went backwards and into the puddle…and her left leg did not know which way to go. The top of her knee went to the right. The bottom of her knee went to the left. Mother described feeling it in slow motion, the clear slide of her knee moving in the wrong direction, before she landed fully into the water.
Covered head to toe in mud and water she got back up. Finally, Mother looks like me! Being covered in mud and water is so much fun!
Abi thought it was hilarious, but at the same time asked Mother if she was okay, because her knee clearly went in the wrong direction. Mother said she was fine, laughed it off, but that she could tell it was definitely going to hurt later when the adrenaline wore off.
When we got home, Mother gave me a bath (I might have rolled in fox poo after all that swimming), then had a shower herself, cause she was incredibly muddy. After this she iced her knee and kept it elevated.
Overnight Mother barely slept, every movement jolted her knee causing sharp pain. So she was tired and grouchy. And by the morning her knee was doubled in size, she couldn’t fully straighten it and she couldn’t fully bend it.
First thing in the morning, she messaged my fave farm family and begged (but not on bended knee cause she couldn’t bend her knee!). They agreed to have me for the day since Mother would not be able to walk me at all. She fed me some breakfast, some yummy Yora pate food - it’s made of insects - and put some kibble in my snuffle ball, and then she ran away to work and left me at home. I was collected 2hours later and then I was on the farm! I love the farm so much!
Mother went to A & E after work yesterday, so I stayed on the farm for that night. Mother went to work this morning, and collected me from the farm after work at lunch time. Thank god we have such good friends on the farm who can look after me when Mother can’t.
She’s hoping that after 36hours of rest she’ll be ok for me to do walkies on Monday, especially since she can’t rest from work. The other vet is on annual leave this week so Mother definitely can’t be signed off sick, although the doctor last night did offer. Mother doesn’t want to disrupt work too much, clients get angry if appointments and operations need to be rearranged.
Instead she plans to hop around work on crutches, and hope the clients are nice enough to give her some slack when she’s running late with consults. And if the clients are rude and unappreciative, then next time she wont bother, and she’ll just get herself signed off.
I may have to go back to the farm if Mother isn’t improved enough to walk me, and if not maybe get the dog walker to come give me walks from work.
Mothers hoping she’s just sprained her Medial Collateral Ligament, and it’ll be better in a few days, maybe a week or so. But if she’s partially torn it, then that may take a while. I hope she hasn’t torn it. I love walks. Mother needs to get better asap to give me more walks. She had an xray at the A & E last night, and there was no obvious fracture or avulsion so that’s something at least.
So this weekend we’re going to have a very calm weekend, lots of sniffing games and snuffle matts for me. And lots of rest and ice packs for Mother.
Fingers and Paws crossed for a speedy recovery.
Oh Credric, I I hope Mother recovers soon. Life can be a bugger and try and stay out of Fox poo if you love your mom. Your bunny friend 🐰
Yes, a speedy recovery to Mother! That sounds so painful for her.
